Walk Ride Day Cambridge Celebration July 27
Mayor Henrietta Davis and co-host Green Streets Initiative invites Cambridge green commuters to join us for Walk/Ride to Work Day and also celebrate “Women & Active Transportation” on Friday, July 27, from 7:30–9 a.m., in front of Cambridge City Hall.
Enjoy fruit and breakfast bars from the Mayor, baked goods from Iggy's Bread, yogurt from Whole Foods, bike safety check-ups, other giveaways and raffle prizes for the Corporate Challenge. Don’t forget that the City is competing in the Corporate Challenge, so please make sure to check in for Cambridge. Also, the Cambridge Health Alliance is hosting a women’s ride to the breakfast! Sign up here. Walk/Ride days are celebrated on the last Friday of every month but we encourage you to walk/ride to work throughout the year!!
Commenting on this month’s theme of women who walk or bike to work, Mayor Davis said, “We want to especially encourage women to use active transport to get around. Just greening your commute one day a month can show you how easy it is, and how much better you may feel after starting your day by raising your heart rate with a little physical activity. Cambridge was recently named “Americas Most Walkable City, and I love getting around the city by walking or biking.”
According to the League of American Bicyclists, only 26% of all bicycle commuters in the US are women – although Cambridge is doing great, we still have a ways to go to get to 50%. Let’s do it! In addition, nationwide, 24% of Pedestrian Committee members are women. We are proud that Cambridge is ahead of the curve with 70% women on the Cambridge Pedestrian Committee and 50% women on the Cambridge Bicycle Committee – Congratulations!
