Best Selling Author Patricia Cornwell Funds Forensic Training in Cambridge

Through a generous donation from Patricia Cornwell, author of the best-selling Scarpetta crime novels, detectives from Cambridge, Harvard, MIT and Everett police departments received Crime Scene Management Training from the National Forensic Academy.

“I feel so incredibly privileged to give back to those in law enforcement who have done so much for me,” said Cornwell. “What a great way to have the best crime scene training made available to police who perhaps can't attend the 10-week National Forensic Academy in Knoxville. In fact, most departments just can't spare their investigators for that long or afford the cost."

Seven training instructors from the National Forensic Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee traveled to Cambridge to provide the week-long training. Twenty-one Cambridge Police detectives, along with six detectives from the Harvard, MIT and Everett police departments attended the training, held at the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility in Cambridge.

“This is a great opportunity for our officers to gain valuable skills,” said Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas. “We’re grateful to Ms. Cornwell for making this training possible, and for the support she’s shown not only for our officers, but for law enforcement as a whole.”

Cornwell’s latest novel, The Bone Bed, is set in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Cambridge Police Department will be featured as Dr. Kay Scarpetta’s home police force in subsequent novels.

Cornwell presented Commissioner Haas with a signed copy of her latest book and will be giving copies to all of the officers upon their completion of the week-long training on Friday.
