Cambridge Adds 30 Covered Bicycle Spaces to Green Street Garage
The City of Cambridge recently added 30 new covered and secure bicycle parking spaces in the Green Street Municipal Garage, 260 Green St., in Central Square. This is in addition to the 401 bicycle spaces that already exist in Central Square and is the second covered location for bike parking created in the Municipal Central Square parking facilities; the other covered location is in Municipal Lot #5, 84 Bishop Allen Drive.
Signs displaying large bicycles have been installed to promote the spaces and enliven the garage. Cambridge built a facility that models the requirements of its new Bicycle Parking Zoning Regulations. This zoning was created to ensure that new projects build sufficient bicycle parking to meet the growing need.
Bicycle use and the need for bike parking in the city has grown tremendously. The number of bikes parked in Central Square has increased 48% since 2007. Since then, the City has added 2 Hubway stations and 163 bike spaces; and demand continues to grow.
The city encourages more bicycling through policy initiatives and infrastructure improvements. This includes providing safe and secure bicycle parking as a public benefit to residents, worker, visitors and shoppers in Cambridge.
