The City of Cambridge hosted the 2012 Fresh Pond Stewardship Awards ceremony Nov. 14 at the Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility. Award recipients Betsy Meyer and Rebecca Ramsay were honored for their long-standing commitment to, involvement with, and love for Fresh Pond Reservation, their deep roots in environmental stewardship, water quality preservation and their keen appreciation for and understanding of the effects of human intervention to preserve, protect and maintain this essential asset of Cambridge’s green environment.

Betsy Meyer has worked tirelessly for years on the Woodland Restoration Project, Lusitania Woodland Habitat Project and Reservation Weeding Programs at Fresh Pond Reservation. She is an active member of the Friends of Fresh Pond Planning Committee and designs and prints its monthly posters. She has served as a Volunteer Steward since 2009 and regularly leads weeding sessions. Betsy was instrumental in monitoring the Friends’ tree nursery, keeping it watered as needed. She supports an array of projects through her knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm for efforts to revive and maintain the ecological balance of the Reservation.

Rebecca Ramsay, a member of the Friends of Fresh Pond since 2005 and of the Friends’ Planning Committee since its founding in 2007, has worked as a Volunteer Steward since 2005. She designs and posts the Friends’ “This Weekend” posters and contributes countless hours of her time in support of efforts to maintain the ecological balance at the Reservation, including her contributions as co-founder of the Cambridge Pod Patrol, an effort to limit the spread of Black Swallow- wort, a particularly tenacious invasive plant.
