Mending Boston Quilt

This spring, following the Boston Marathon tragedy, two local artists started work on a special memorial quilt entitled “Mending Boston.” Part artwork, part community outreach, the quilt was created by artist and activist Clara Wainwright in collaboration with Eve Perkins, and more than 250 people of all ages across the greater Boston community. The quilt serves as an impressionistic map of the areas most affected by the Boston Marathon tragedy, with the Marathon route running through its center. The four corners are dedicated to the people who lost their lives. The names of all the people who were hospitalized are sewn in blue thread.

The two artists brought the project to groups of people throughout Cambridge and the Boston area. At hospitals and health centers, churches, schools, libraries, museums, police departments and other civic organizations, individuals stitched hundreds of pieces of fabric, ribbons, beads, sequins—even some resistors and integrated circuits—along with precious mementos into this unusual tapestry.

The quilt will be on display at Cambridge City Hall, 2nd Floor, for the next week.
