Arrest Made in Indecent Assault
Suspect Arrested in Connection with Indecent Assault in Canal Park in Cambridge
In the early morning hours of 11/11/2011, a female reported being approached from behind by an unknown male in Canal Park in East Cambridge.
The suspect allegedly approached the victim from behind, pushed her to the ground, and attempted to sexually assault her before fleeing into a nearby building. The victim was not injured.
Immediately following the assault, Cambridge Police began actively investigating the incident. Detectives were assigned to the case and reviewed nearby surveillance footage for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.
A warrant was issued, and Cambridge Police arrested Elisee Myrthil, 27, of 96 West Street in Hyde Park and charged him with Assault to Rape.
“This is an example of exceptional police work on the part of our officers and detectives,” said Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas. “Investigators got to work on this case immediately, reviewed evidence, and within hours of the incident had a suspect whom they were able to successfully apprehend. We hope the suspect’s arrest will help bring some closure to the victim.”
Investigators are working closely with our law enforcement partners across the region to determine if this incident is related to the recent sexual assaults on the Esplanade in Boston and the assaults in the neighboring communities of Somerville and Medford.
An alert was not issued to the community at the time of the incident because investigators did not believe the suspect posed an ongoing threat to public safety. There were also concerns that the suspect may flee the area if he was aware that police were looking for him, complicating efforts to arrest him and hold him accountable for his crime.
The details contained above are allegations. The suspect is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
