Cambridge Police Department Welcomes 4 New Officers
On Friday, November 18th, the Cambridge Police Department welcomed four new police officers to its ranks at a swearing in ceremony conducted at the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility for the Cambridge Police Department Class of 2011.
After successfully completing their training at the Lowell Police Academy and graduating on 11/17, Officers Ryan T. Callinan, Edmund A. Costa, Daniel S. McGinty, and Paul M. Burke, Jr. took their oath and recited the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics administered by City Clerk Margaret Drury in front of their friends and families. Also in attendance were City Manager Robert W. Healy, Police Commissioner Robert C. Hass, State Representative and City Councillor Timothy J. Toomey, Jr., and many members of the Cambridge Police Department.
“This is an important day for you, your friends, and your relatives,” said City Manager Robert W. Healy. “This is an incredible police department and an incredible city.”
State Representative Timothy J. Toomey, Jr., son of a former police officer, spoke to the officers about the responsibility that comes with their knew badges, saying, “All of you have a great tradition to follow, to live up to, and a great name to uphold and protect.”
Addressing the families and friends in attendance, Commissioner Robert C. Haas said, “Policing is a complex and demanding profession. That is why it is so important that your families are here to support you. I applaud all of the families for being here and supporting these young men, because without you they can’t do their jobs.”
The new officers will now attend two weeks of in-service training to learn the Cambridge way of policing, be instructed in department policies, and learn CPD’s rules and regulations. After that, they will be assigned to a Field Training Officer for an additional eight weeks where they will work different shifts and train with different officers, to get hands-on experience on the street in Cambridge. Once they have completed their training, the officers will receive their assignments and be deployed sometime in mid-January.
