Cambridge Police Make 17 Arrests during “Operation Booting Heroin”
Police focused on Central Square and surrounding areas
To combat street level drug distribution within the City of Cambridge, members of the Cambridge Police Department Special Investigations Unit launched “Operation Booting Heroin” late last summer.
This operation was initiated in direct response to an increase in drug distribution and heroin use within Central Square as well citizen complaints about activity in the neighborhood. This area has also been the source of an increase in overdose related calls for service and a recent stabbing.
“Operation Booting Heroin’ was a great success in removing known distributors and drug users from City streets,” said Deputy Superintendent Paul Ames. “The work of the members of our Special Investigations Unit resulted in many drugs being recovered and will hopefully have the effect of showing that drug use and distribution will not be tolerated, not only in Central Square, but throughout Cambridge. We also hope that these arrests will increase the quality of life for all who frequent the square.”
The beginning phase of the operation ran from August through November of 2011 and resulted in seven arrests for engaging in drug related behavior. The final phase took place on March 29 and 30, 2012 and resulted in ten additional arrests on drug related charges. Some individuals were arrested on several occasions and for multiple charges.
