ADVISORY: CPD Shares Information on Larceny of Bicycles & Scooter/Motorcycle Thefts

Details highlighted in June BridgeStat crime report

7/12/2012

July 12, 2012 – Highlighted in this month’s BridgeStat monthly crime report, the Cambridge Police Department is warning residents of an increase in the number of larceny of bicycles and thefts of scooters and motorcycles across the city.

Thus far in 2012, there has been a 10% increase in larceny of bicycles above the number reported during the first 6 months of 2011.  This can be attributed, at least in part, to the mild and relatively snowless winter we experienced this year which caused more bicycles to be out when they would not normally be.

There were 43 bike thefts reported during the month of June, with the majority of thefts involving bikes that were locked, but left out in the open (locked to public bike racks or sign poles, for example).

The neighborhoods that have reported the highest number of thefts thus far in 2012 are Cambridgeport (27), Mid-Cambridge (16), East Cambridge (13), Peabody (13), and Riverside (12).

A string of scooter and motorcycle thefts has also been identified, with 4 thefts reported between June 28 and July 1.  This is similar to an increase seen regionally, and residents should take the following precautions to deter the theft of their bicycles and motorcycles/scooters:

  • Always lock your property to a stationary object; if possible lock it in more than one way.
  • Lock bicycles using a sturdy U-Lock.
  • Cover the motorcycle/scooter whenever possible.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Park property in a garage, if possible.

More information and safety tips are available in the June BridgeStat report available at www.CambridgePolice.org/BridgeStat.
