The Cambridge Police Department welcomed twelve new police officers to its ranks at a swearing-in ceremony held in the Sullivan Chamber at Cambridge City Hall for the Cambridge Police Department Class of 2012.Class of 2012

After successfully completing their training at the Lowell Police Academy and graduating last week, Officers Asif Ali, David Barkhouse, Joshua Buxbaum, Omar Corona, Joseph Grassi, Jonathan Martins, Charles McNeill, Jr., Kevin Medeiros, Christopher O’Callaghan, Ivelise Padgett, William Porter, William C. Simmons, Jr. took their oath administered by Interim City Clerk Donna P. Lopez in front of their friends and families.  Also in attendance were Deputy City Manager Richard C. Rossi, Police Commissioner Robert C. Hass, Vice Mayor E. Denise Simmons, and members of the City Council and the Cambridge Police Department.

Deputy City Manager Rossi welcomed those in attendance on behalf of City Manager Robert W. Healy, saying, “Congratulations to you and your families.  Being a part of the Cambridge Police Department is like being drafted by the New England Patriots; you come on to a great team, with a great history, and great potential.”

“I am very excited to be here and to say thank you.  Thank you for what you are about to do, and thank you for taking on this job and this opportunity,” Vice Mayor E. Denise Simmons said on behalf of Mayor Henrietta Davis.  “Thank you for joining an extraordinary police department.”

Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas reminded the new officers that, “People are watching you all the time and looking to you to exhibit the type of conduct that you are sworn to enforce.  Each and every one of you shape and uphold our reputation.  Don’t let us down, I know you won’t.”

The new officers will now attend two weeks of in-service training to learn the Cambridge way of policing, be instructed in department policies, and learn CPD’s rules and regulations.  They will each be assigned to a Field Training Officer for an additional eight weeks where they will work different shifts and train with different officers to get hands-on experience on the street in Cambridge.  Once they have completed their training, the officers will receive their assignments and be deployed sometime in mid-January.
