About Commissioner Larrabee:

Acting Commissioner Larrabee

Brent B. Larrabee was appointed Acting Police Commissioner for the City of Cambridge Police Department in January 2017 following the retirement of Acting Commissioner Christopher J. Burke.

Larrabee joined the Cambridge Police Department with more than 44 years of law enforcement experience. He started his policing career in his hometown of Framingham, Massachusetts in 1972. After a distinguished 15-year career and numerous promotions, Larrabee was appointed Chief of Police in 1987. He remained Chief until 2001, when he retired after developing a community policing initiative with an emphasis on youth, schools, domestic abuse, narcotics abuse and citizen participation in policing. Following his retirement, Larrabee served as interim Chief of Police of the Westwood, Massachusetts Police Department, where he coordinated the search for and the selection of a new Chief of Police. He also served as the Chief of Police of the Stamford, Connecticut Police Department from 2005-2010, interim Chief of Police of the East Haven, Connecticut Police Department between 2012-2013 and, most recently, the Chief of Police for the East Haven, Connecticut Police Department since 2013.

During his career, he has been a consultant to a number of cities and towns working on executive searches as well as policing projects. Larrabee has attended numerous executive seminars, including the Executive Session on Policing, Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the Law Enforcement Executive Development at the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Quantico, Virginia, and the Senior Management Institute of Police, Police Executive Research Forum at Merrimack College in North Andover.

A Message from the Commissioner:

As someone who has previously worked closely with members of the Cambridge Police Department and observed the department evolve into one of the most progressive in the country, I am deeply honored to lead the Cambridge Police Department.

I have tremendous respect and admiration for Commissioner Haas and Acting Commissioner Burke. I am committed to completing and progressing the initiatives they left behind and ensuring the highest quality of service and protection for our residents. With my experience in assisting municipalities recruit and identify executives, I am also eager and enthused to help the City of Cambridge secure the type of permanent Police Commissioner who will evolve the Department into one that remain among the most widely regarded agencies in the nation.
