Cambridge Public Library launches annual Margret and H. A. Rey Curious George Lecture Series
The Cambridge Public Library launches annual Margret and H. A. Rey Curious George Lecture Series, with Newbery award-winner, Kate DiCamillo, this March.
The Main Library names two-time Newbery medalist and beloved children’s author, Kate DiCamillo its speaker for the first annual Margret and H. A. Rey Curious George Lecture Series on March 9. The event connects children and their families to the magic of reading through a memorable experience with an author or illustrator. The lecture series - developed from a brainstorming session between Youth Services Manager, Julie Roach and the Curious George Fund - creates a community celebration around outstanding and engaging books for young readers. Speakers are chosen in honor of Margret and H.A. Rey, Cambridge residents who created many beloved children’s books including Curious George.
“I’m excited that the Library has this opportunity to host this series of celebrated authors and illustrators for children, starting with the much-loved Kate DiCamillo,” said Roach. “This series will allow us to connect all children in our community to creators of books truly meaningful to them.”
Classics from DiCamillo’s catalog include Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux and most recently, National Book Award finalist, Raymie Nightingale. Known for her themes of hope and belief in times of challenge, DiCamillo’s books have resonated with readers of all ages around the world.
DiCamillo’s publisher, Candlewick Press, is an independent children’s-only publisher based in Somerville, Massachusetts. Publisher and Managing Director Karen Lotz says, “We are thrilled to support this new initiative here in our hometown, and could not be more delighted that the Library and the Curious George Fund have selected beloved author Kate DiCamillo for the inaugural address of their exciting and notable new lecture series.”
The Margret and H.A. Rey Lecture series will take place on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 6:30 PM in the Main Library Lecture Hall. For more information on the lecture series visit www.cambridgepubliclibrary.org/curiousgeorgelecture
