Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What can I do to prepare for the various screening tests?
A: Not much, except make sure you really have the required typing skills because you will be tested. Persons who do not achieve a touch typing speed of 30WPM net of errors will not proceed further in the process. Typing is critically important given the need to quickly type into various computer systems the details of 911 telephone conversations and police and fire radio transmissions.
Q: Do I need a car if I am selected for this job?
A: Most all current dispatchers have a car, a few commute on a bike, and sometimes dispatchers take public transit. There is underground parking available in the ECD facility (as well as in an adjacent parking garage). Because of the rotating shifts, dispatchers can get off shift at 11PM any day of the week and will sometimes have to be back at work at 7AM the next day.
