The core services of the Information Technology Department center around maintaining the City network, providing computer and peripherals service and support to all City Departments, hosting enterprise applications and the City website, developing on line strategies to empower the public to do business with the City via the Web.

E-Services

Services such as E-Line , Pay Bills Online and Property Database , to name a few, are provided directly to the public to enhance the accessibility and transparency of City government using the official City of Cambridge Website as a key communication and service-delivery channel.

Network Services

The City of Cambridge is fortunate to own and operate the City network. This network runs throughout the City connecting all 42 locations, including Public Safety, Schools and Libraries. It provides a secure Internet access to all City Staff. The City is currently in the process of upgrading the phone system to run Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on this same network. This group within IT has implemented the City’s Wifi infrastructure and makes Wifi available for the public at Public Meeting Buildings, Schools and Libraries in the City.

Enterprise Application Management

ITD supports various Enterprise Applications such as Oracle/Peoplesoft for Finance & Human Resources, the Cambridge Request System (CRS) built on a product called Remedy as a work order/asset management system for all complaints and projects for operational departments such as DPW, Traffic…etc., throughout the City. The award winning Geographical Information System (GIS) is fully developed and hosted within the IT GIS Department.

Technical and User Support Services

The IT Department uses the CRS system to log all tickets for computer related incidents or requests. State of the art products have been implemented in the department to allow the staff to be extremely responsive and efficient when troubleshooting problems. Most reported problems are resolved in the same day as reported.

Website Management

The City of Cambridge Website is a collaborative project that involves the entire City. All City business and services are promoted on the Website. Online services for paying bills, applying for permits, etc. exist on the Web. The website is supported with a Content Management system which allows for the maintenance of content to be refreshed, added or deleted by non technical staff within a Department.

Systems Support Services

ITD maintains a significant amount of servers and computers throughout the City. System Engineers maintain the computer infrastructure of the City as well as plans for and design the changes and upgrades to keep the City current with technology. This group also is responsible for implementing Security services.

Geographical Information Services

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer resource that makes map creation and information retrieval efficient and easy. The City of Cambridge uses GIS to create, maintain, and analyze its spatial information. GIS has become an important component for projects in nearly every department of the City. Some examples of available Cambridge GIS data include roads, buildings, tax parcels, water lines, street lights, and aerial photographs.
