The City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will pave the roadway on Monday, October 30th (weather permitting).
This work is expected to take approximately 1 day to complete, weather permitting, but Tuesday, October 31st is the scheduled rain date for paving operations.
Vehicle access in and out of properties will be restricted during work hours while crews perform the paving. Please plan vehicle trips accordingly.
Punch list items, back of sidewalk work, and pavement markings remain and will be completed by the contractor in the coming weeks before the end of construction.
This notice is to share information about changes made to the plans for the reconstruction of Lawn Street.
After a request from several residents for additional trees/greenery on Lawn and May streets, members of the Public Works Department met with residents on site to discuss possible additions to the roadway plan.
Due to the narrow width of the streets and sidewalks, adding bump outs on May and Lawn streets to make room for additional plantings was recommended.
As you will see in the color renderings of the plans available under the "Documents" tab on this page:
- 3 green bump outs are being added to the roadway
- May St., northbound, between Lawn St. and Lawn Ct.
- A street tree will be added inside this bump out with grass around it
- Lawn St., south side, at the corner with May St.
- Low plantings and grass will be added at this location
- Lawn St., south side, around existing large street tree
- Grass will be added to this bump out around the existing tree at the driveway

For interested residents, the City offers a Back of Sidewalk Tree Planting Program. This program was designed to improve our urban forest through public/private tree planting partnerships, and the City will plant trees along the back of sidewalk, (up to 20 feet off the public way) on private property of interested, eligible owners. If you are interested, please contact Public Works so staff can meet with you and evaluate the location.
The next phase of the Lawn Street Reconstruction Project involves roadway and curb/sidewalk work. The City’s contractor, Newport Construction, anticipates beginning this work on or about mid-June with work lasting approximately 6-8 weeks.

Community meeting schedule for January 25th
As part of the Lawn Street Reconstruction Project scheduled for spring 2017, the City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will begin work installing new catch basins in the roadway on or about the week of January 16, 2017.
This first phase of utility work is expected to last for approximately 5 weeks, weather permitting, and general work hours will be 7am-4pm, Monday-Friday. “No Parking” signs will be posted, so please be sure to check posted signs to avoid being ticketed/towed. The roadway and sidewalk reconstruction is scheduled to occur beginning this spring and last approximately 3-4 months.
The Lawn Street Reconstruction Project is part of the City’s 5-Year Plan for Street and Sidewalks and will include paving, sidewalk work, and pedestrian ramp installations on Lawn St. between Oxford and Cushing streets.
We invite you to attend a community meeting with your neighbors and members of the Department of Public Works on Wednesday, January 25th from 6-7:30pm in the Haggerty School Cafeteria located at 110 Cushing St. to learn more about this project, its scope, and anticipated schedule. At the meeting we will also be discussing:
- Back of Sidewalk Tree Planting Program
- The term “Back of Sidewalk" refers to the edge of the sidewalk where public way meets private properties. In the case of this program, the City will plant trees along the back of sidewalk, (up to 20 feet off the public way) on private property of interested, eligible owners.
- Sidewalk material options
- It is the City’s policy to replace existing sidewalks with the same material (concrete with concrete, brick with wire cut brick). However, during this project, property owners will have the option of changing their sidewalk material for a fee if they choose. More information will be made available to property owners.
