Memorial Drive Traffic Delays
Over the next few months, the Larz Anderson Bridge Repair Project, Western Avenue Reconstruction Project, and bridge repairs to the Reid Overpass will be under construction simultaneously. Significant delays should be expected along Memorial Drive, both eastbound and westbound. We encourage Cambridge residents who live in the area to walk, bike or take public transportation, whenever possible. A map is located below to help you identify the work zones around Memorial Drive in Cambridge.

Western Avenue Reconstruction Project
Over the next few weeks, the City’s contractor will be working on the installation of the 36” drain line on Western Ave near Memorial Drive. This work will impact the traffic on Western Ave and Memorial Drive, as Western Ave will be reduced to one lane of travel during work hours (7am-4pm Monday thru Friday) between Putnam Avenue and Memorial Drive. After working hours, motorist will regain three lanes of travel between Blackstone Street and Memorial Drive. For more information on the Western Avenue Reconstruction Project, please click here.
Reid Overpass Repairs
On Sunday, April 7, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will be closing the bridge that carries Memorial Drive over the rotary at the BU Bridge in Cambridge. The bridge, known as the Reid Overpass, will be closed to all vehicles, as well as to cyclists and pedestrians in both the eastbound and westbound directions. All vehicles will be diverted to the surface roadways and through the BU Bridge/Brookline Street rotary, and back on to Memorial Drive. The overpass will be closed to allow crews to perform structural repairs; the work is anticipated to last six months. For transportation news and updates visit the MassDOT website at www.mass.gov/massdot. Work will be going on around the clock, 7 days a week. Crews will be working between the hours of 6:00am - 12:00am.
