This week three crews will be onsite. Crew one will be working on the installation of the stormwater storage tank on Hovey Avenue. Crew two is working on concrete sidewalks on the east side of Myrtle Avenue. The third crew will be pouring a new concrete driveway to the entrance of Lamont Avenue on Wednesday.

This week, crews will be backfilling and temporary paving the previous work zone. Crews will also begin to excavate and install steel sheeting for the next work zone. The driving of the steel sheeting will generate noise and vibrations in the immediate area.

The restoration of Kirkland Street is expected to start on Tuesday, April 2. After crews complete the restoration of Kirkland Street, they will proceed toMyrtle Avenue for reconstruction.

March 12, 2013

The City’s contractor, D’Allessandro Corp., will be finished this week with the structural installation of the stormwater storage tank pump station. As a result of this completion, crews will be relocating the work zone further down Hovey Avenue towards Cambridge Street on Monday, March 18th, in order to continue with the installation of the stormwater storage tank. Since crews will be mobilizing further down Hovey Avenue, two (2) Spaulding Hospital Parking Lots will have temporary access ramps, as the new work zone will be blocking the existing access ramps. Crews will be constructing one (1) ramp on Hovey Avenue and the other ramp on Roberts Road this coming Friday to allow access the hospital parking lots. The City’s contractor will begin installation of a stormwater storage tank on Hovey Avenue this Monday, December 17, 2012. The stormwater storage tank, which will hold 175,000 gallons of water, is designed to help alleviate flooding in the area. Since the tank is extremely large, it will require a shutdown of Hovey Avenue on a 24 hour basis until May 2013, weather permitting.

- Crews will be paving Kirkland Street between Quincy Street and Beacon Street. From Monday through Thursday October 22 - 25, the road will be closed to traffic heading eastbound into Somerville during work hours of 7 AM to 4 PM. This closure will allow base paving of the drainage improvement project area on Kirkland Street. The paving work will be completed by D'Allessandro Corp. This closure of Kirkland Street is necessary due to a reduction in roadway width caused by construction equipment. Pedestrian access and access into properties will be maintained at all times, but may be restricted in certain ways. Driveway access may be restricted at times.

On the weekend of October 20 and 21, Kirkland Street between Irving Street and Beacon Street will be closed to through traffic during work hours of 7 AM to 7 PM. The road will be reopened overnight. From Monday through Wednesday October 22 - 24, the road will be closed to traffic heading eastbound into Somerville during work hours of 7 AM to 4 PM. The City's contractor, D'Allessandro Corp., has completed the sewer main installation on Magnolia Ave. Crews are now installing a new stormwater main on Magnolia Ave.  We expect this work to continue through mid June. Once the utility on Magnolia Ave is complete, crews will begin roadway and sidewalk reconstruction (week of July 9).

Construction will be completed in phases, and will take 16-18 months to complete. General work hours will be 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday-Friday.

We will continue to provide updates as the project moves forward.

 

Mid-Cambridge has a history of flooding and sewer backups during heavy rain. The stormwater storage tank on Hovey St will provide storage capacity for stormwater during periods of heavy rain. This project will enable further sewer and stormwater separation to go forward in the Mid-Cambridge neighborhood.

The project includes the following improvements:

  • A stormwater storage tank on Hovey Ave.
  • New sewer and water mains on Myrtle Ave, Magnolia Ave, and a section of Hovey Ave.
  • Associated surface restoration to include new roadways, sidewalks and street trees.
  • Sidewalk improvements to accommodate pedestrian access at several existing large street trees.
  • Potential improvements to the Myrtle/Magnolia crosswalk.
