Summer 2012

The City has awarded a contract for the reconstruction of Waterhouse Street to Tasco Construction Co. This project includes sidewalk reconstruction, roadway paving, and traffic calming improvements.

The City’s contractor will begin to mobilize for the sidewalk and street construction during the week of September 4, 2012. Construction activity will continue for approximately 2 months, with additional finish work to be scheduled for next spring, following a winter construction moratorium. Recently completed utility improvements on Waterhouse Street will minimize the need for future construction on Waterhouse Street once the surface improvements are completed.

Please consult the Documents Tab for final plans and a more detailed project notice.  Thank you for your patience during this construction. We hope you enjoy these improvements once they are completed.

The City’s contractor will begin to mobilize for the sidewalk and street construction on Waterhouse Street during the week of September 4, 2012. Construction activity will continue for approximately 2 months, with additional finish work to be scheduled for next spring, following a winter construction moratorium.

General work hours will be 7AM to 4 PM, Monday-Friday. “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance of construction; please be sure to check posted signs for exact dates and times. When work occurs directly in front of driveways or entryways, the contractor will coordinate access directly with residents.

The Waterhouse Street improvements include reconstruction of the sidewalk, repaving of the street and traffic calming elements to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance safety for pedestrians.

The design for Waterhouse Street was developed through a community process that included two neighborhood meetings organized by the city and several meetings with individual property owners.

Improvements include:

  • Reconstructed sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, and roadway;
  • A new sidewalk along the Cambridge Common (Garden St to Mass Ave);
  • Curb extensions at the intersections of Waterhouse Street and Garden Street;
  • A raised intersection at Concord Avenue and Waterhouse Street that replaces the existing traffic signal;
  • A curb extension at Waterhouse Street and Follen Street that includes new crosswalk markings;
  • A planting area between Follen Street and Little Mass Ave; and
  • A re-alignment of existing the crosswalk and the installation of an additional crosswalk across Mass Ave.

A plan of the improvements is available at

Please contact Juan Avendano at 617.349.4655 or javendano@cambridgema.gov if you have any questions or would like more information about the design for this project.

This project is part of a larger Chapter 90 contract.  Chapter 90 contracts are funded by the state and managed by the Public Works Department. They are a major portion of the Engineering Division's five year plan. Construction generally includes surface enhancements such as pavement, sidewalk and pedestrian ramp reconstruction, traffic calming, and greenscaping. Minor stormwater management is also occasionally included.
