September 24, 2014

As part of the Irving Street/Scott Street Reconstruction Project, the City’s contractor, D’Allessandro Corporation, is scheduled to resume roadway reconstruction in the project area during the week of September 29. During the next 2-3 weeks, crews need to make adjustments to the current roadway conditions in preparation for the final roadway paving operation. The final roadway paving is scheduled for the end of October 2014. Another notice will circulate to area residents when a paving date has been solidified.

Next week, the City's contractor is expected to mobilize to the area to perform activities related to the roadway reconstruction phase of the project. Final paving is expected to be completed at the end of October 2014.

The City of Cambridge has awarded D'Allessandro Corporation the contract to complete the roadway paving associated with the Scott & Irving Project. The schedule will be published on the website when it becomes available.

April 8, 2014

As part of the Irving Street/Scott Street Reconstruction Project, the City’s contractor, Deroma F. & Sons, are scheduled to begin the construction of the raised intersection at Farrar Street/Irving Street/Scott Street. To ensure that the raised intersection is built quickly and efficiently, the construction will be broken up into two (2) phases. Please click here to view the detour maps for each phase.

Phase 1
• Irving Street will be closed (24 hours) on the north side of the raised intersection.
• Residents of Irving Street who live between Bryant Street and Scott Street will need to exit the area via Bryant Street.
• One (1) lane of alternating traffic will be implemented for motorists traveling east on Irving Street (towards Beacon Street) and West on Scott Street (towards Kirkland Street).
• Phase 1 is expected to take up to one week to complete, weather permitting.

Phase 2
• Farrar Street will be closed (24 hours) from the south side of the raised intersection.
• Residents of Farrar Street who live between Irving Street and Holden Street will need to exit the area via Holden Street.
• One (1) lane of alternating traffic will be implemented for motorists traveling east on Irving Street (towards Beacon Street) and West on Scott Street (towards Kirkland Street).
• Phase 2 is expected to take up to one week to complete, weather permitting.

April 3, 2014

Earlier this week, the City’s contractor, F. DeRoma & Sons, mobilized to the Irving Street/Scott Street area to resume work. Please see below to view the upcoming schedule.

Upcoming Schedule

• Beginning April 3, 2014, crews will make their way to Kirkland Street to reconstruct four (4) wheelchair ramps. This work is expected to take one week to complete and may impact traffic, but thru traffic will remain at all times. Please note that during this time, the contractor will begin to mobilize equipment and material to the area in preparation for the raised intersection.

• Once crews have completed the wheelchair ramps on Kirkland Street, they will begin to construct the raised intersection where Farrar Street, Irving Street and Scott Street meet. The raised crosswalk will take up to 2-3 weeks to complete and due to the size of the intersection, traffic will be impacted. City staff are currently working with the contractor to establish detour routes for each phase of the raised intersection. Area residents will be notified with a separate notice at least 48 hours in advance of construction at the intersection.

• Plantings and work in the greenspace will begin in late April. The final paving of the roadways is scheduled to take place this summer. More details will follow in the coming months.

This week, NSTAR Electric crews are scheduled to remove the double utility pole at the intersection on Irving Street. The City's contractor is expected to resume work within the coming weeks.

October 8, 2013

This week, crews will be performing sidewalk work on the north side of Scott Street and the south side of Irving Street. In connection with the city’s roadway and sidewalk reconstruction project on Irving St., the City’s contractor, DeRoma Construction, will be closing Irving St. between Kirkland St. and Farrar St. during working hours (7am-3pm, Tuesday thru Friday) for the remainder of the week. This closure is needed so that crews can perform sidewalk work near the Kirkland St. intersection. A soft closure will be in effect on Tuesday, October 8, which allows emergency vehicles access to the roadway. Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, October 9, motorists and emergency vehicles will not be able to access Irving St. (between Kirkland St. and Farrar St.) via Kirkland St.. Motorists will be detoured to Holden St. for access to Farrar St., Scott St., and Irving St.. Police details will be onsite to assist with traffic management.

This week, crews will be resetting the curb on the south side of Irving Street between Farrar Street and Kirkland Street. Another crew will be onsite this week to pour the concrete sidewalks on the south side of Scott Street between Holden Street and Farrar Street.

In preparation for the final roadway paving in late August, the City’s contractor, Tasco Construction Company, has already pulverized the roadway on Scott Street and will now be putting on a binder course material on the roadway tomorrow Friday, July 26. The operation is expected to be completed in one day. Due to unforeseen circumstances, crews had to cancel the roadway operation that was scheduled for today. We apologize for any inconvenience.

On Thursday, July 25, crews will begin to put down binder course material on the roadway. This is being done in preparation for final paving. Scott Street and Irving Street will be closed to through traffic, but abutters will maintain access.

July 11, 2013

The City has awarded a contract for the reconstruction of Irving Street and Scott Street to the Tasco Construction Company. The contractor will begin to mobilize for construction during the week of July 15, 2013. Major construction activity will continue for approximately 2 months.

The reconstruction of sidewalks and roadway is expected to be completed in September 2013. Beginning in June 2013, NSTAR Gas updated services on Irving Street and Scott Street. During the week of July 8, NSTAR Gas completed this work. The City's contractor, Tasco Construction Company, will begin to adjust drainage structures, which will be followed by the reconstruction of the sidewalks and roadway.

What to Expect During Construction
• General work hours will be 7AM to 4 PM, Monday-Friday.

• “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance of construction; please be sure to check posted signs for exact dates and times.

• When work occurs directly in front of driveways or entryways, the contractor will coordinate access directly with residents.

 

Traffic Calming Improvements (see attached plan for details):

  • Scott / Irving / Farrar Intersection
    • Raised intersection, squared off corners,  and addition of two green spaces for plantings
  • Irving / Kirkland Intersection
    • Narrow Irving St at Kirkland St to match the rest of Irving Street, new crosswalk across Kirkland St, curb extensions, and addition of green space for planting.

Sidewalk Reconstruction and Roadway Paving:

  • Irving St between Kirkland and Scott St
  • Scott St between Irving St and Bryant St

Utilities:

  • Scott St between Irving St and Bryant St
    • A new water main and a new drain line.

  • Plantings
  • Raised Intersection
