See Documents tab for plans for the proposed roadway and sidewalk work on Richard Avenue and Muller Avenue.

As mentioned at the community meetings, the main goal of the project is to create an accessible route for all users of the street. The plan includes the creation of an accessible route on the west side of Richard Avenue, the east side of Murray Hill Road, and the south side of Muller Avenue.

The work also includes the relocation of an existing fire hydrant from the middle of Richard Avenue to the area next to the intersection of Richard Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue. The plans were developed taking into consideration the input from the residents and the evaluation of the sidewalk conditions, on-street parking and driveway locations.

The construction is anticipated to start spring/summer 2018, we will send more specific construction dates as soon as we get the schedule from the contractor.

September 2015

The Department of Public Works and the City’s Community Development Department will be hosting a third community meeting on Wednesday, October 7th at 6:30pm inside of the Burns Apartment Complex (30 Churchill Avenue) to discuss the Richard Ave and Muller Ave Reconstruction Project.

During this meeting we will discuss the conceptual plan presented at the second community meeting and decide on the alternatives to create accessible sidewalk route that meets access code therefore addressing the needs of all users.

The Richard Ave and Muller Ave Project is scheduled to begin in Spring 2016 and is part of the City’s five year plan for street and sidewalk reconstruction. The project will also include pedestrian safety improvements.

July & August 2015

There is no scheduled work or community meetings scheduled for the months of July and August. During these months, Juan Avendano, Traffic Calming Project Manager, will be meeting with select residents to address accessibility issues on Richard Avenue. Mr. Avendano has also spray painted (in white) what the bump outs on Richard Avenue would look like. This is a great opportunity to view what option seems to work best for the community. Only one side of the street will need to have a bump out or bump out(s) incorporated into the design. The final community meeting will take place in Fall 2015. Once a date has been solidified, notifications will be distributed to the community.

June 2015

The Department of Public Works and the City’s Community Development Department will be hosting the second community meeting on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:30pm inside of the Burns Apartment Complex (30 Churchill Avenue) to discuss the Richard Ave and Muller Ave Reconstruction Project. During this meeting we will recap the comments given by residents at the first meeting, present a conceptual plan that addresses those comments and provide updates on the Muller Ave water main work. This project is a part of the City’s five year plan for street and sidewalk reconstruction, Richard Ave and Muller Ave project is scheduled to begin in Spring 2016. The project will also include pedestrian safety improvements.

May 2015

In association with The Department of Public Works (DPW) roadway and sidewalk reconstruction project, the Cambridge Water Department (CWD) will be replacing the old water main on Muller Avenue, starting at Churchhill Avenue and working towards Murray Hill Road. This work is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 18th, or soon thereafter. During this process the Water Department will be upgrading the existing 100+ year old 6” cast iron water main with a new 8” Ductile Iron water main which will include all valves hydrants and water services. This work is expected to take approximately two months to complete.

IMPROVING YOUR WATER SYSTEM:
As part of our ongoing maintenance program, we must periodically recondition and replace sections of our water system to maintain the highest quality water at an adequate pressure. Some of the benefits of this work are improved water quality, better flows, increased fire protection and better control of our system.

HOW WILL THIS WORK AFFECT MULLER AVENUE RESIDENTS?
WATER SERVICE - The water main or your water service may need to be taken out of service to improve the system. During this project we will make every effort to minimize water service interruptions. While the work is in progress, residents and businesses along the route may have a need to be provided with a “temporary” supply of water during these interruptions. We will notify you at least 72 hours in advance of any water interruptions and make every effort to minimize impacts to your water service.

PARKING - Some restricted parking will occur during construction and every effort to minimize this inconvenience will be made. Daily work zones will be posted for no parking and every effort will be made to avoid any vehicle towing.

PLEASE….WATCH YOUR STEP!
If you live, travel, work or shop in the project area, you'll notice a number of openings in the street to allow access to the water main running across the intersections. All openings will be covered at the end of each workday and will be resurfaced as soon as possible after the project is finished. You can help by cautioning your family and friends to watch their step and to avoid the work areas as much as possible.

May 5, 2015

As part of the City’s five year plan for street and sidewalk construction, Richard Ave and Muller Avenue are scheduled to be reconstructed in Fall 2015. On Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30pm, the Community Development Department and the Department of Public Works will be hosting a community meeting at the Burns Apartment Complex (30 Churchill Avenue) to discuss the upcoming sidewalk and roadway reconstruction project. The project will also include pedestrian safety improvements. We encourage you to attend this meeting to learn more about the design and other important information related to the project.

The contractor has resumed construction activities in the Richard and Muller Ave neighborhood.  Crews will replace lead water services and perform roadway reconstruction during the week of May 22. Once the road work is complete, crews will reconstruct sidewalks, pave the roadway, repaint the crosswalks and plant trees.

We expect all construction activities to be complete by mid-August.

Please check back for updates..

The City of Cambridge has a 5 Year Roadway and Sidewalk Reconstruction Plan. The conditions of all roadways and sidewalks are evaluated on an annual basis to address the surface conditions. Richard Avenue and Muller Avenue have been identified as two streets that have poor surface conditions and are in need of new surfaces. Before the contractor breaks ground, we will complete an evaluation of utility lines (water and sewer) to ensure that no updates are needed. At this same time, we will allow Eversource Gas to conduct their own evaluation to decide on whether or not any services or gas mains need to be updated. If any utility work is required, it will be performed before the sidewalks and roadways are reconstructed.
