For the past six years, the Department of Public Works has sponsored Team GreenSense, a worksite of the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program (MSYEP). Each summer the DPW employs 10-15 teens for six weeks to learn about and work on solving environmental problems both locally and globally. Each week is dedicated to a specific sustainability topic such as climate change and urban sustainability, water conservation, waste management, renewable energy and green building.

As a ‘Work and Learning’ site, Green Sense team members take part in learning activities, which include online research, guided discussions, film screenings, and field trips to local educational sites. Previous years’ tours include science centers, waste incinerator, farmer’s markets, water treatment facility, recycling center and community farms. Team members also participate in hands-on service projects with various City departments and external partners. Examples of previous project-based work include removing invasive plants from the Mystic River, gardening and composting in local school or community gardens, and assisting the City of Cambridge’s Planning and Transportation Department with its outreach efforts. Throughout the program, the youth are introduced to the various career and job opportunities in the environmental and sustainability fields. The program concludes with a video that the students design and film themselves which highlights some of the environmental challenges our communities are facing and provides tips to “go green” and live more sustainably here in the City of Cambridge.
