Improvements to Citywide Senior Center and Moore Youth Center

caution sign The information on this page may be outdated as it was published 7 years ago.

The Municipal Facilities Improvement Plan (MFIP) is administered through the Department of Public Works and is completing roof replacement projects at the Moore Youth Center at 12 Gilmore Street, and the Citywide Senior Center at 806 Massachusetts Avenue. These projects are being performed in conjunction with the Department of Human Services which operates public programs in both buildings, as well as the Cambridge Historical Commission, in support of the buildings’ status as historically significant for the City of Cambridge.

Moore Youth Center: Russo Barr Associates, the architect for the Moore Youth Center, has designed a standing seam metal roof to replace the existing asphalt shingled roof. An existing membrane roof at rooftop mechanical equipment will be replaced in kind. Both roofs will be fully insulated from the exterior in order to maintain historically significant, interior exposed steel trusses and wood roof decking in the gymnasium. Select clerestory windows in the gymnasium will be replaced with energy efficient units and will replicate the original window design. Leading Way Construction has been awarded this contract and began work on Wednesday, November 23, 2016. Completion of this project is scheduled for January 2017.

Citywide Senior Center: Arup Engineering and Icon Architecture have specified replacement membrane roofing at the upper and lower roofs of the Citywide Senior Center. The lower roof’s existing roof top patio will receive upgrades to existing patio finishes, lighting, and accessibility, as well as a 10 kW photovoltaic (PV) array for renewable electrical production on a new shade canopy. This PV array is expected to produce approximately 1/25th of the building’s monthly electrical usage. Homer Contracting has been awarded this contract and began work the week of November 28, 2016. Completion of this project is scheduled for March 2017.
