Cambridge St. Tunnel Work (7/15, 7/22, 7/29)

caution sign The information on this page may be outdated as it was published 6 years ago.

POSTPONED: This project has been postponed and more information will be provided when available.

Last summer, several pieces of failing concrete on top of Harvard University’s Science Center Plaza fell onto the roadway below in the Cambridge Street tunnel. Crews made immediate repairs to ensure public safety until more permanent repairs could be made. These repairs are located above the eastbound lanes on the east side of the tunnel (near Cambridge Fire Headquarters). Earlier this week, crews began making permanent repairs to the area. Repairs will be made both on the Science Center Plaza, and from the roadway. To make the repairs from the roadway crews will need to occupy one travel lane of the Cambridge Street tunnel in both directions. Please see below for additional details.

Additional Details

  • Weather permitting, crews are scheduled to perform crane operations (to remove and replace precast panels of concrete) on the following dates:
    • Saturday, July 15 (6am-3pm)
    • Saturday, July 22 (6am-6pm)
    • Saturday, July 29 (6am-3pm)
  • During work hours, there will only be one lane of travel in each direction through the Cambridge Street tunnel.
  • Traffic will be stopped and/or detoured in both directions of the Cambridge Street tunnel during crane picks (3-4 picks per operation) to ensure vehicular safety.
  • Several police details will be on site to assist with traffic management.
  • Emergency vehicle access through the tunnel will be maintained at all times
We certainly appreciate your patience as we make these critical repairs. Please contact the Harvard University Construction Mitigation Office at 617-496-0857 or email mitigation@csl-consulting.com with any questions or concerns.
