Employment at DPW
The majority of positions at Public Works are subject to civil service rules and regulations. Generally our positions are classified as follows: Labor Service, Official Service, and non civil service positions (both permanent and temporary).
Labor Service jobs are filled through the labor service registration where applicants are placed on waiting lists and ranked in order of registration date and other priority categories. All applicants interested in labor service employment with the City of Cambridge must complete an application with the Personnel Department. Personnel also posts all labor service job opportunities and generates the Civil Service list of eligible applicants when Public Works has an open labor service position. In cases of internal job promotions, eligible employees in lower grades can bid for promotion.
Official Service jobs are those for which an examination is generally required and include all clerical, administrative, technical, and professional positions in all nonexempt departments. Exams and eligibility lists are administered by the Massachusetts Human Resources Division, One Ashburton Place, Boston, MA 02108.
Other Public Works' permanent and temporary positions that are are not subject to the above Civil Service requirements are posted by the Personnel Department. Please check this website regularly for new job opportunities in all City of Cambridge departments.
