Weekly Construction Highlights
Construction for the week of August 18, 2014
The Cambridge Water Department is expected to resume the installation of the water main between St. Mary Road and Hampshire Street within the next two weeks. The Cambridge Water Department will be distributing notices to the neighborhood in advance to resuming the work.
Broadway at Trowbridge Street (no link)
Last week, the City’s contractor, F. DeRoma & Sons, is planning to reconstruct the sidewalks and roadway around the Broadway and Trowbridge Street intersection. This work is being performed in order to improve the sidewalk and road conditions for all users. Crews anticipate on completing this work by the end of the month.
Cambridge Street Tunnel
Crews have mobilized to the area to replace the 2” concrete overlay in the Cambridge Street Tunnel. The concrete overlay, which was installed in the summer of 2013, did not bond properly with the floor of the tunnel and began failing last fall. Over the winter and spring, sections of the overlay deteriorated and had to be replaced with temporary asphalt patches. Next week, the contractor will begin to remove the 2” concrete overlay, make any necessary repairs to the concrete base and then place the new concrete wearing surface. The work will be done in phases to maintain one travel lane in each direction of the tunnel, and is expected to be completed by September 2014
For the next several weeks, crews will be working Sunday through Thursday from 7am -3pm. This week, crews will be performing roadway work on Massachusetts Avenue and work inside of the Cambridge Common.
Concord Ave Project
There will be several crews in the area:
Crew #1 - Concord Ave (Fresh Pond Parkway to Chilton) – Sewer and drain
Crew #2 - Contract Area – Test Pits / Pre-construction activity
Crew #3 - Fayerweather (Field to Walden ) and Ivy- Water main
Crew #4 - Concord (Walden to Huron)-Drain and Sewer
Crew #5 - Corporal Burns - Private Inflow Work
Concord Avenue will have one lane of eastbound traffic. Westbound traffic will be diverted at Huron Avenue to Garden Street. MBTA buses, emergency vehicles, and local resident access will be permitted. Police details will be in place to direct traffic in these locations.
Huron A Project
There are three crews in the area performing sidewalk work:
Crew #1 - Lakeview (North & South) – Curbs and sidewalks
Crew #2 - Vassal – Curbs and sidewalks
Crew #3 - Malcolm- Curbs and sidewalks
Crew #4 - Lakeview (North) – Curbs and sidewalks
Crew #5 - Worthington- Curbs and sidewalks
Huron B Project
This week, there will be several crews in the area:
Crew #1 - Chilton – Water main
Crew #2 - Granville - Drain and Sewer
Crew #3 - Lincoln- Drain and Sewer
Crew #4 - Fayerweather (Huron to Reservoir) – Drain and sewer work lll
Crew #5 - Huron (Vassal and Appleton) – Drain and Sewer
Crew #6 - Vassal (Alpine to Huron) – Water main
Crew #7 - Huron (Fayerweather to Fresh Pond) - Drain and sewer mainline and services
Crew#8 - Royal - Drain
Crews will continue to perform punch list items to complete the project. On Thursday, August 21, the City's contractor is tentatively scheduled to line stripe the roadway, Fawcett Street from Concord Avenue to Smith Place. The line striping will take place during evening hours.
Irving Street/Scott Street Construction
The final roadway paving is scheduled for August 2014.
Longfellow Road Reconstruction Project
This week, crews will continue to perform sidewalk work. Longfellow Road will be closed on most week days during general hours (Monday thru Friday, 7am-4pm).
Crews are currently performing work at the corner of Ames Street and Main Street. Beginning Wednesday, August 20, the Third Street connector will be closed.
This week, there will be two crews on site. One crew will be performing work at the corner Mass Ave at Shepherd Street. Crews are also performing sidewalk walk between Walden Street and Cogswell Avenue.
The City has awarded the contract for the reconstruction of Mead Street to D’Allessandro Corporation. This project includes the installation of drainage structure, sidewalk reconstruction and roadway paving. During the week of August 18, 2014, the City’s contractor will begin to mobilize to the area to begin the drainage work. Construction activity will continue for approximately 5 weeks, with the roadway paving scheduled for mid/late October 2014.
Mt. Auburn Street
Crews continue to perform sidewalk work on the north side of Mt. Auburn Street. Another crew is performing drainage work on Channing Street at the corner of Mt. Auburn Street.
Crews continue to work on the punch list of items in order to complete the project.
Crews are performing test pits on Erie Street this week.
Western Ave Reconstruction Project
This week, two crews continue to work on sidewalks and the roadway from Soden Street to Dodge Street.
