Weekly Construction Highlights
Construction for the week of September 22, 2014
The Cambridge Water Department is currently installing a new water main between St. Mary Road and Hampshire Street.
Broadway at Trowbridge Street (no link)
The City’s contractor, F. DeRoma & Sons, will be performing final roadway paving operations at the intersection of Trowbridge Street and Broadway.
Cambridge Park Drive (no link)
As part of the ongoing construction of the Contract 12 – Cambridge Park Drive Drainage Improvements Project, the City’s contractor P. Gioioso & Sons, Inc., will begin reconstructing the pedestrian ramps and mill and overlay of roadway on Cambridge Park Drive from 125 Cambridge Park Drive to Cambridge Park Place. The contractor will begin to mobilize for roadway and sidewalk work on Cambridge Park Drive on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Work is expected to be complete in 3-4 weeks.
Cambridge Street Tunnel
Crews have mobilized to the area to replace the 2” concrete overlay in the Cambridge Street Tunnel. The concrete overlay, which was installed in the summer of 2013, did not bond properly with the floor of the tunnel and began failing last fall. Over the winter and spring, sections of the overlay deteriorated and had to be replaced with temporary asphalt patches. Next week, the contractor will begin to remove the 2” concrete overlay, make any necessary repairs to the concrete base and then place the new concrete wearing surface. The work will be done in phases to maintain one travel lane in each direction of the tunnel, and is expected to be completed by October 2014.
This week, crews will be performing surface work on the traffic islands and handicap ramps.
Concord Ave Project
There will be several crews in the area:
Crew #1 - Concord Ave (Birch to Chilton) – Catch basin installation
Crew #2 - Contract Area – Test Pits / Pre-construction activity
Crew #3 - Concord Ave- Private inflow
Crew #4 - Concord (Walden to Huron)-Catch basin installation
Crew #5 - Fayerweather (concord to field), Hazel, Copley- Temp. water
Crew #6 -Fayerweather (Copley to Field) and Copley- Drain and Sewer
Crew #7 -Corporal Burns- Water main installation
Concord Avenue will have one lane of eastbound traffic. Westbound traffic will be diverted at Huron Avenue to Garden Street. MBTA buses, emergency vehicles, and local resident access will be permitted. Police details will be in place to direct traffic in these locations.
Huron A Project
There are three crews in the area performing sidewalk work:
Crew #1 - Lakeview (South) – Curbs and sidewalk. Bio basin installation
Crew #2 - Lexington (South) - Curbs and sidewalks
Crew #3 - Vassal/Fresh Pond/ Lakeview intersection: Curbs and sidewalk
Crew #4 - Standish- Curb and Sidewalk
Huron B Project
This week, there will be several crews in the area:
Crew #1 - Chilton- Surface work
Crew #2 - Huron (Vassal and Appleton intersection) - Drain and sewer mainline and services
Crew #3 - Vassal (Alpine to Huron) – Water main
Crew #4 - Granville- Water main
Crew #5 - Fayerweather- Temporary water
Crew #6 - Appleton (South of Huron)- Drain and sewer
Crew #7 - Huron Ave (Vassal and Fresh Pond Parkway- various locations)- Catch basins and Verizon work
Irving Street/Scott Street Construction
As part of the Irving Street/Scott Street Reconstruction Project, the City’s contractor, D’Allessandro Corporation, is scheduled to resume roadway reconstruction in the project area during the week of September 29. During the next 2-3 weeks, crews need to make adjustments to the current roadway conditions in preparation for the final roadway paving operation. The final roadway paving is scheduled for the end of October 2014. Another notice will circulate to area residents when a paving date has been solidified.
Longfellow Road Reconstruction Project
The contractor will be performing miscellaneous sidewalk/roadway work this week.
This week, crews continue to work on the conduit at the Third Street Connector. Additional crews will be performing work on the 12" water main. The Third Street connector will be closed during this work.
Crews will be performing sidewalk work on the north side of Massachusetts Avenue between Russell Street and Hadley Street. Another crew is performing sidewalk work on Massachusetts Avenue at Martin Street.
In early September, the City’s contractor, D’Allessandro Corporation, installed a new drainage structure on Mead Street. While performing the drainage work, it was discovered that sewer line on Mead Street is in need of repairs. The sidewalk and roadway restoration phase of this project has been postponed until the sewer line has been repaired.
Mt. Auburn Street
Crews continue to performing sidewalk work on Mt. Auburn Street between Traill Street and Fresh Pond Parkway. Next week, crews will begin to work on the ramp realignment at the corner of Fresh Pond Parkway and Mt. Auburn Street.
This week, crews will begin to work on the irrigation system and install concrete pavers and sidewalks.
Western Ave Reconstruction Project
There will be several crews on site this week working on the north side sidewalks and roadway on Western Avenue between Soden Street and Dodge Street. The contractor will be placing temporary road pavement in the north lane on Western Avenue on Tuesday, September 23 and Wednesday, September 25.
Due to the temporary roadway paving that is expected to begin tomorrow morning at 7am in the north lane of Western Avenue , Soden Street at Western Avenue, will be closed tonight and will reopen tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon at 3:30pm. Soden Street residents are asked to seek alternative routes to and from their homes during this time frame.
