Myrtle/Magnolia Ave Project

Infrastructure improvement project in the Myrtle/Magnolia Ave neighborhood of Mid-Cambridge.

 


This project has been completed. No further updates to this project page will be made.


October 2015

Contractor will be on site week of October 26 to fix puddling issues on Magnolia. 

Additional work to be completed week of November 2.

Anticipated completion in Fall 2015.


January 12, 2015

The City's contractor, D’Allessandro Corporation, will have an electrician on Hovey Avenue this Thursday and Friday to perform electrical work for the new pump station control box. No Excavation will be required, but construction vehicles will be onsite.

On Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26 (weather permitting), the City’s contractor, D’Allessandro Corp, will be performing roadway paving operations on Kirkland Street (between Line Street and Holden Street), Myrtle Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, Hovey Avenue, Lamont Avenue, and two small sections of Cambridge Street at Hovey Avenue and at Roberts Road. Please see below to view the road closure schedule during paving operations.

 

Friday, October 25

  • Kirkland Street (between Line St. and Holden St.), will be paved one half at a time to allow for traffic to flow through the area.
  • Myrtle Ave. will be closed from 7am – 6pm.
  • Magnolia Ave. will be closed from 7am-6pm.
  • Lamont Ave. will be closed from 11am-6pm.

Saturday, October 26

  • Hovey Ave. will be closed from 7am-1pm.
  • Cambridge St. will remain open to traffic while paving operations at the intersection of Hovey Ave. and at the intersection of Roberts Rd. take place.

What to Expect During Construction

  • “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance of construction. Please be sure to check posted signs for exact date and times.
  • Police details will be onsite to help with traffic management.

In connection with the Myrtle/Magnolia Project, the City’s Contractor, D’Allessandro Corporation, will be rehabilitating the sewer line on Myrtle Avenue on Wednesday, October 9. The rehabilitation will provide a new, joint less sewer pipe that will minimize root and water infiltration issues. It is designed to improve the flow and will provide a more structural pipe without the need for excavation. This work is expected to take one day to complete. During this work, motorists will not be able to access the Myrtle Avenue via Kirkland Street from 8am to 4pm. Myrtle Avenue abutters must access the roadway via Magnolia Ave. General working hours will be from 8am-4pm and police details will be onsite to assist with traffic management.

This week, crews will be performing sidewalk work on the east side of Hovey Avenue. Another crew will be constructing a bump out on Myrtle Avenue from Monday to Wednesday, and during that time, Myrtle Avenue will be closed from 7am-4pm. Abutters will need to access Myrtle Avenue via Magnolia Avenue.  On Thursday, September 26, crews will be reconstructing the raised crosswalk on Roberts Road at Cambridge Street. While crews are completing this work, Roberts Road will only be opened to abutters between 7am-4pm.

On Friday, July 19 and Monday, July 22, Magnolia Avenue will be closed during work hours (7am-4pm) between Hovey Avenue and Roberts Road. This partial road closure is needed for the City’s contractor, D’Allessandro Corporation, to excavate and tie in the new 8” water main from Hovey Ave onto Magnolia Avenue. Vehicles coming down Magnolia Avenue will be forced to take a left onto Hovey Avenue. Lamont Avenue residents will be able to access Magnolia towards Roberts Road. Roberts Road will be open at Kirkland Street.

In connection with the Myrtle/Magnolia Project, the City’s Contractor, D’Allessandro Corporation, will be performing the installation of a raised crosswalk on Myrtle Ave at the Kirkland Street intersection. This work is expected to take two days to complete and will begin on Monday, June 3. During this work, Myrtle Ave residents will not be able to access the roadway from Kirkland Street from Monday, June 3 at 7am to Tuesday, June 4 at 3pm. Access to Myrtle Ave must be accessed via Magnolia Ave.

The City’s contractor, D’Allessandro Corp., will be finished this week with the structural installation of the stormwater storage tank pump station. As a result of this completion, crews will be relocating the work zone further down Hovey Avenue towards Cambridge Street on Monday, March 18th, in order to continue with the installation of the stormwater storage tank. Since crews will be mobilizing further down Hovey Avenue, two (2) Spaulding Hospital Parking Lots will have temporary access ramps, as the new work zone will be blocking the existing access ramps. Crews will be constructing one (1) ramp on Hovey Avenue and the other ramp on Roberts Road this coming Friday to allow access the hospital parking lots. The City’s contractor will begin installation of a stormwater storage tank on Hovey Avenue this Monday, December 17, 2012. The stormwater storage tank, which will hold 175,000 gallons of water, is designed to help alleviate flooding in the area. Since the tank is extremely large, it will require a shutdown of Hovey Avenue on a 24 hour basis until May 2013, weather permitting.

This closure of Kirkland Street is necessary due to a reduction in roadway width caused by construction equipment. Pedestrian access and access into properties will be maintained at all times, but may be restricted in certain ways. Driveway access may be restricted at times.

From Monday through Wednesday October 22 - 24, the road will be closed to traffic heading eastbound into Somerville during work hours of 7 AM to 4 PM. Anticipated completion Fall 2015

The City's contractor, D'Allessandro Corp., has completed the sewer main installation on Magnolia Ave. Crews are now installing a new stormwater main on Magnolia Ave.  We expect this work to continue through mid June. Once the utility on Magnolia Ave is complete, crews will begin roadway and sidewalk reconstruction (week of July 9).

Construction will be completed in phases, and will take 16-18 months to complete. General work hours will be 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday-Friday.

We will continue to provide updates as the project moves forward.

 

Mid-Cambridge has a history of flooding and sewer backups during heavy rain. The stormwater storage tank on Hovey St will provide storage capacity for stormwater during periods of heavy rain. This project will enable further sewer and stormwater separation to go forward in the Mid-Cambridge neighborhood.

The project includes the following improvements:

  • A stormwater storage tank on Hovey Ave.
  • New sewer and water mains on Myrtle Ave, Magnolia Ave, and a section of Hovey Ave.
  • Associated surface restoration to include new roadways, sidewalks and street trees.
  • Sidewalk improvements to accommodate pedestrian access at several existing large street trees.
  • Potential improvements to the Myrtle/Magnolia crosswalk.
