Recycling

Recycling Is Easy! Use the Get Rid of It Right tool to see if an item can be placed in curbside recycling.

Recycling is picked up curbside on the same day as trash, compost and yard waste. See the holiday schedule here. Most residences have recycling carts on wheels (65 or 95 gallon) for single stream recycling. Residents may convert a 32-gallon trash barrel to use for recycling by adding a City sticker, or use blue bins. See below for materials request form. Please remember recycling is mandatory in Cambridge. You can reduce your trash by at least 50% to help protect the environment and save the City money.

Mix your clean CONTAINERS and PAPERS and CARDBOARD together in the same recycling bin. Large rigid plastics and clean foil are also accepted. Use the Get Rid of It Right tool to check what's accepted. Recycling flyer.

Important Tips:

  • Empty and rinse containers. Please no liquids or food residue.
  • Place materials loose in your bin. Plastic bags are not accepted in the curbside program because they jam the equipment at the sorting facility. The one exception is for shredded paper; use clear plastic bag.
  • Materials that do not fit in your bin can be placed next to it.
  • Recycling can be rejected. Remember no trash, no plastic bags, no Styrofoam and no yard waste. Use the Get Rid of It Right tool if you aren't sure if your item can be placed in the curbside bin.
  • Close the loop! Buy products made from post-consumer recycled materials.

Recycling in Multi-family Buildings:
Recycling information should be distributed to new residents at move-in, and annually to all residents. It should be clear that recycling is mandatory and expectation of everyone. Recycling staff can meet with property managers and/or custodial staff to help troubleshoot problems. Recycling staff also give presentations. Contact us.
