License Commission

The License Commission, comprised of a chairperson, the Fire Chief, and the Police Commissioner, is charged with the responsibility of issuing licenses and enforcing rules, regulations, local ordinances, and state laws pertaining to the sale of alcoholic beverages to common victuallers, innholders, lodging houses and dorms, garage and gasoline storage permits, shops and sales, hackney carriages and drivers, open air parking lots, entertainment, fortune tellers, raffles and bazaars, festivals, used car dealers, peddlers, auctioneers, jitneys and livery/limousine licenses in the City of Cambridge.

It is strongly suggested that, whenever possible, the applicant visit the License Commission Office during regular business hours for application forms and procedures necessary for the business that the applicant wishes to start in Cambridge. There is always a staff member available to assist with the application process. When a visit is not possible, the License Commission staff will send application forms and procedures to the applicant by mail.

The License Commission usually meets on the second and fourth Tuesday evening of the month. Call our office at 617-349-6140 for exact schedule and filing deadlines.

Renewal Season - 2017 Licensees Information

Cambridge Licensees should have received emails with regard to the renewal of their 2017 licenses. The applicant must come into the License Commission with the completed and signed renewal, payment, and supporting documents to renew their license.

If you have an Alcohol license you will receive two separate renewals, one from the ABCC and one from the License Commission. Alcohol Licensees must log on, register, link account and renew with the ABCC through their e-Place Portal. If you need assistance you may come into the office and we can walk you through the registration process.

The email from the City of Cambridge will include the Renewal Instructions and total fee due.

If you hold multiple licenses (i.e. Alcohol, entertainment and Common Victualler) you will receive a separate renewal email for each license type.
