Single Stream Recycling Starts Strong

Cambridge residents have been recycling at high levels during the first month of the City’s new single stream recycling program. During its first full month, recycling increased by 125 tons (20%) compared to November 2009! We recycled 781 tons in November 2010, compared to 656 tons last November. The City’s recycling program serves residences, city buildings, schools and houses of worship. Single stream means that you can place clean bottles, cans, paper and cardboard together in the same bin.

Over 150 residents and city employees toured the Casella Recycling facility in Charlestown this year to see the cutting edge sorting technology used to separate our recyclable materials, which are marketed to companies that make new products. Go to Cassella Recycle for two short recycling videos and for more program information.

Yard Waste Ends & Christmas Trees

The last week for separate collection of yard waste is December 13-17. Separate yard waste collection will resume April 1, 2011. Curbside collection of bare Christmas trees will be Jan 3-14, weather permitting.

The Movie, narrated by Jaime Lee Curtis, which brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that the soil has. Drought, climate change, and even war are all directly related to the way we are treating dirt. The movie shares stories of experts around the world who study and harness the beauty and power of a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with soil.

Green Gift Ideas

Reducing waste is especially important during the holiday season. This year, give tickets to a film, concert, play, or game. Give gift certificates for dinner, massage, museum, or fitness. Donate to a charity or non-profit organization in the name of a family member or friend. Use the comics as gift wrap.
