Do not staple or tape yard waste bags. No plastic bags. Recycle leaves, grass and small twigs and branches (no more than 1 inch in diameter or 3 feet in length). Bundle thick tree limbs 3ft x 3ft. Pumpkins are accepted. Place yard waste at the curb by 7am on collection day or after 6pm the night before. Call DPW at 617-349-4800 or stop by 147 Hampshire Street for stickers.
Food Scraps Drop-off Program Update
New: food scraps now accepted in biodegradable bags, that are BPI certified with the US Composting Council seal. Some common brands are BioBags, Bio-Tuf, EcoChoice, BagsToNature, and EcoSafe. The Recycling Center is located in the back right corner of the DPW yard at 147 Hampshire St. We’re open: Tues/Thurs 4-7:30pm and Sat 9-4pm. Click here for more info.
Since February 2008, Cambridge residents have dropped off 70 tons of food scraps for composting at the Recycling Center and Whole Foods Prospect St. That’s 140,000 pounds of CO2 emissions avoided! Tell your Cambridge neighbors, friends and family about this exciting program.
Keep composting the right stuff for the drop-off program: all vegetable & fruit scraps, coffee grounds, filters & tea bags, eggshells & nutshells, grains & baked goods, meat, fish, bones, cheese, food-soiled napkins & paper towels (no tissues), and food-soiled, biodegradable paper products (no plastic coated). Please wrap meat/fish in newspaper to help control odors. No soup, no liquids, and no grease.

We also recognize a large multi-family building for waste reduction. Self nominations are accepted. The deadline for GoGreen Awards nominations is April 5, 2010.
