Gift Ideas!

Reduce holiday waste. Give experience gifts (tickets to a show, gift certificates for dinner, massage, or museum). Give gifts of time (babysit, make dinner). Donate to a charity or non-profit in their name. DIY - make a something old something new. Use the comics as gift wrap. Give others a “gift exemption card”. For more ideas see the Simplify the Holidays Guide or Buy Nothing Christmas.

MassRecycle Gives Cambridge Recycling Award

Cambridge received MassRecycle’s 2011 Board of Director’s Outstanding Achievement Award for visionary leadership and innovative efforts to improve recycling and waste reduction. DPW Commissioner Lisa Peterson accepted the award at the ceremony last week. Our programs couldn’t be a success without the awesome support and participation from people like you.

Public Works is on Facebook

Our new DPW Facebook page offers us another way to communicate with the Cambridge community. We will provide more info on our programs, projects, and events. It’s not intended to be used to report issues or request service. Please “like” our page, our goal is to post about 1-2 updates per week.

Save the Dates: Recycle Christmas Trees Jan 3-13

Curbside collection of bare trees will begin Tuesday Jan 3 through Friday January 13, weather permitting. Remove all decorations and stands. Don’t put in a plastic bag. Every year, residents recycle thousands of trees, which the City chips and uses for mulch. Remember that collection is delayed 1 day during holiday weeks.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Email recycle@cambridgema.gov for info…

Jobs = Recycling

Check out a new report called "More Jobs, Less Pollution" which shows that a 75% national recycling rate would create 1.5 million jobs, reduce 267 million metric tons of pollution by 2030 -- about the same as taking 50 million cars off the road. The report was released by the BlueGreen Alliance, Natural Resources Defense Council, Teamsters, SEIU, Recycling Works! and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives.
