New Covered Bike Parking in East Cambridge Garage

110 new covered bicycle parking spaces have recently been added in the City of Cambridge-operated First Street Garage in East Cambridge. This bike parking area follows covered bicycle parking installed in other locations including the Green Street Municipal Garage and Municipal Lot #5, both in Central Square. Its purpose is to serve residents, workers, and shoppers in the East Cambridge area near the Cambridgeside Galleria Mall.

The new racks, which opened earlier this week, will help meet the growing need for bicycle parking. According to surveys administered at the Cambridgeside Galleria, the number of shoppers who use cars to travel to the mall has declined to only about a quarter of all visitors. With the 110 new covered bike parking spaces expanding on the existing uncovered bike racks and two Hubway stations in the area, this trend towards more sustainable transportation choices can continue to be supported.

The First Street Garage is located across the street from the Galleria and three blocks from the Lechmere T stop. The entrance to the garage’s bike parking area is on Spring Street, just past the main garage entrance and before Second Street.
