Description and purpose

A dumpster permit reserves 40 feet of space on a City street for a specific number of days to temporarily park a dumpster used during construction.  City staff will post signs at the requested location for your dumpster once your permit has been approved and paid for.

Any Cambridge property owner is eligible to apply.  Applications may be submitted by the property owner or the contractor.  Applicants must meet the requirements of the City's ordinance (Chapter 8.25 of the Cambridge Municipal Code) regarding the licensing of dumpsters.  Prior to obtaining a dumpster permit, you must obtain a dumpster license from the City of Cambridge Inspectional Services Department. Click here for information on Dumpster Licensing.

How to Apply

  • Permit applications must be submitted at least 4 business days prior to your dumpster installation date so we can approve your application and post signs 48 hours in advance to allow people time to move vehicles parked at permitted locations.   To apply, please click on the link at the bottom of this page for the online application form or come to our office.
  • To reserve space at a metered location, you must select the meter numbers from the dropdown on the permit application.  To see the specific location of meters on a map click here.
  • Once approved, we will email your permit to you. In some instances emails will end up in spam or junk folders. Please check all email folders for your permit.  If you do not receive your permit please contact our office.

Application Fee     $100.00
Weekly Fee        $75 for the first week, $100/week thereafter
Plus meter fee ($10/day) if applicable.

Each permit is issued for 40 feet of space to ensure companies have sufficient space to install and remove dumpsters.

Dumpster permits cannot be paid for online.  You must call 617-349-4721 to pay by credit card or come to our office to pay by credit card, check or cash.
