Pedestrian Programs

Walking in Cambridge

Walking is a healthy, environmentally friendly way to get around Cambridge and the Boston area and is a key part of the City's efforts to improve mobility and protect our environment. It allows you to combine transportation and exercise. It is the form of exercise that people are most likely to stick with over time. An important component of the City's pedestrian program is to improve walking conditions in the city. This is done in various ways, including making traffic signals work better for pedestrians, reducing crossing distances where possible, repairing and improving sidewalks, reviewing proposed developments to make sure they are as pedestrian-friendly as possible, and encouraging landscaping and building designs that make walking pleasant. Cambridge also promotes walking through promotional activities and educational projects.
