Cambridge Public Library
                    Board of Library Trustees

A regular meeting of the Board of Library Trustees was held on
Monday, February 5, 1996 at 7:30 p.m. in the Administration Office,
449 Broadway, Cambridge.

The following members of the Board of Library Trustees were
present:
               Mr. John A.P. Good, Treasurer
               Mr. Andre Mayer, Secretary
               Ms. Janet Axelrod 
               Also present:
               Susan M. Flannery, Director
               Marian Hampton Assistant Director
               Marilyn Gagalis, Administrative Assistant
               
In the absence of Mrs. Johnson, Andre Mayer was voted Chairperson
protem.
  
A motion to accept the minutes of the December meeting was made and
seconded. 
 
Susan Flannery thanked Janet Axelrod for the role she played in a
grant that the library received from the Funding Exchange in the
amount of $1,500.00 for general operations.  

The Board was provided copies of letters from Cambridge resident
Gary Waldron and Jewish Interaction, both commending Central Square
Branch employees.

Marian Hampton reported on the status of the O'Connell Branch. 
Program attendance and circulation has increased slightly and the
librarian is optimistic about the increasing numbers.

John Good suggested that the branch librarian at the O'Connell
Branch Library become involved in the 50th anniversary celebration
which could potentially revitalize the neighborhood.  

Susan Flannery reviewed the strategic plan and asked the Board
Members if they had any questions, changes, etc.  Andre Mayer
suggested one minor change.  John Good asked if the City Manager
was aware that the library had completed this strategic plan. 
Susan reported that it was listed as one of the library's
accomplishments in both our budget and annual report.

John Good reported on the activities of the Library Design
Committee.  Before their meeting to decide which design to endorse,
the entire Committee toured the Main Library facility with the
architectural team.  He informed the Board that it was a unanimous
decision by the Committee to choose the "J Plan."  


Susan Flannery presented the FY97 Budget package to the Board. 
This included supplemental requests and the Capital Budget.  Board
members reviewed the budget and supported the requests made for
FY97 funding.  

Susan Flannery informed the Board of a celebration by the Cambridge
Mental Health Association honoring Library Trustee James Roosevelt,
Jr.

The next meeting will be Monday, March 4, 1996 at 7:30.

There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 9:30
