Board of Library Trustees Minutes

A regular meeting of the Board of Library Trustees was held on Monday, January 10, 2000 in the Director’s Office of the Main Library. The following members of the Board of Library Trustees were present:

• Ms. Janet Axelrod
• Mr. Andre Mayer
• Mr. James Roosevelt, Jr.
• Ms. Nancy Woods

also present:

• Susan Flannery, Director of Libraries
• Philecia Harris, Assistant Director
• Marilyn Gagalis, Administrative Assistant

The minutes of the December meeting were approved.

The board observed a moment of silence in honor of Board member John A.P. Good who passed away on December 15, 1999. All present expressed their personal condolences. After a brief discussion, the Board voted unanimously to dedicate the Children’s Room of the Main Library in memory of John Good. The dedication should be planned for the immediate future. It was further decided that the board would submit a memorial article to the local newspapers acknowledging Mr. Good’s long tenure with both the Board of Library Trustees and the Cambridge School committee. Trustees also agreed to ask the City Council to name a square in proximity to St. Peter’s Church in memory of John and Edna Good.

In light of the vacancy created by the death of Trustees John Good, Board members expressed their strong desire to create a more diverse Board of Trustees when filling this and future vacancies. A number of strong candidates were discussed as potential Board members.

Correspondence from Keith Michael Fiels and Anna McAuliff was acknowledged.

The board’s discussion of strategic planning continued with a request for Susan Flannery to provide them with the results of recent staff meetings that focused on this issue.

Also discussed was the Board’s interest in the Friends of the Cambridge Public Library and their advocacy role.

Nancy Woods spoke about the opportunity to broadcast library promotional materials on CCTV. Susan Flannery informed Board members that one of our employees had been working on such a video which could potentially be broadcast on CCTV> When this project is complete, Susan Flannery will inform the Board.

Nancy also provided Board members with a map of the grounds of the CRLS. Ms. Sarah Mae Berman supplied these maps to Nancy for each trustee to use as an overview of open space around the library.

The next meeting of the Board of Library Trustees will be on Monday, February 7, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. in the Director’s Office of the Main Library.

There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15p.m.
