Board of Library Trustees Minutes

A regular meeting of the Board of Library Trustees was held on Monday, February 11, 1999 at 7:30 in the DirectorÌs Office of the Main Library, 449 Broadway. The following members of the Board of Library Trustees were present:

On a motion duly made and seconded, Janet Axelrod was elected Chairperson Pro Tem.

A motion to accept the minutes of the January 1999 meeting was passed.

Jean Williams, recently appointed Librarian V at the Central Square Branch, updated the Board on the status of the branch including the inauguration of the Bengali Collection and the opening of the Rotary Technology Learning Center.

Angela Ayre, recently appointed Librarian V/Literacy Coordinator at the Central Square Branch, updated the board on the status of the literacy program.

Correspondence was acknowledged from Peter Berry to the City Council regarding the establishment of a branch library in Area IV. Since the proponents of this idea have not contacted the library, the Board requested that Ms. Flannery contact Mr. Berry and offer to meet with his group.

Ms. Flannery reported that STS has sent out the Main Library site surveys and that responses are coming in.

Ms. Flannery also reported on the grand opening of the Rotary Technology Learning Center at the Central Square Branch on February 24, 1999. Mr. Mayer was chosen to speak on behalf of the board. Mr. Good suggested that the Technology Learning Center would be an excellent topic for "Cambridge Inside/Out" and suggested that Ms. Flannery contact Tom Rafferty or Glenn Koocher.

Ms. Flannery presented the Board with the budget submitted by the library to the city Manager.

The Board expressed interest in having a discussion of their vision for the board at their next regular meeting.

The next meeting of the Board of Library Trustees will be on Monday, March 1, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at the Main Library.

There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 9:45 p.m.
