Who are the tutors?

Literacy Project tutors are members of the community who appreciate what reading and writing has brought to their lives, and want to share this interest with others. Many tutors also share their knowledge of basic computer skills. Most live in Cambridge or nearby. Adults of many different ages and occupations volunteer. Each tutor is interviewed and trained before being matched with a student, and receives ongoing support from the coordinator.

Where and when do tutorials meet?

Tutorials meet once a week for 1 ½ to 2 hours at the Central Square Branch Library. Most tutorials meet on Tuesday or Thursday evenings; however some tutorials meet at other times that work for the tutor and student.

How long does the program run?

The Literacy Project is in operation from September to May, with a two-week break around the December holidays. The most successful tutorials involve at least a one year commitment from tutors and students.
