What Students say about the Literacy Project
Taking my first step was very hard. I came to the library many times and got to the door and turned around. At that time, I was frustrated that I could not take the first step to learn to read and write. Then I thought about it and decided to do it. I got signed up with the program and then I came to the appointment and took the test. I felt comfortable right away. I feel good with one on one tutoring. I feel like I can do so much on my own now. I can read and figure things out. I am not the best writer, but I am getting better. I hope nothing and nobody will stop me from coming here. Someday maybe I can volunteer for someone just like I was helped.

Now that I have been in America for many years, I have six grown children. They have all completed college. Since they are all adults now, I have time to take English classes. I am learning how to read and write with the help of my tutor at the Cambridge Adult Literacy program.

I decided to go back and try to get some sort of education for myself, but who had the time with work and everything else going on in my life? It was hard to go back to school full time, so instead I found myself in a program that the Cambridge Public Library called an adult literacy program. That was just right for me. At first it was so hard with no motivation at times and just bored at other times, but I wanted more out of life. So I knew I had to start over in order to accomplish something that made sense to me in my life. So after speaking with Angela, I found out who my teacher was going to be. Two weeks later, I met Jeanette. She taught me what I needed to know and I was really impressed by her patience for someone who gave up in the past.
