You won’t regret it- even when you’re tired and want to go home, you’ll enjoy your student and feel pride in him/her and in yourself.
Have fun and be flexible and creative.
Be ready not to do the things you thought you would, for a situation that doesn’t fit into your conceptions.
Be organized and spend some time thinking through how things will progress over the year. Enjoy yourself!
You learn more about yourself when you help others.
Progress with adults can be slow, BUT every new thing learned is a plus and makes the tutee feel better about his/herself.
The time given is so small compared to what we waste doing other things, i.e. TV, etc- and the reward is beyond comprehension!
Patience and stabs in the dark get you far. Use techniques that work . . . then find new ones.
Try to get to know your student and try to make them laugh a little.
You are doing such valuable work, and you will get so much back. The students in the Literacy Project are motivated and inspiring.
