Cambridge Sustainability Compact Announces Three-Year Work Plan

Members of the Cambridge Compact for a Sustainable Future recently approved the adoption of the Compact’s new strategic plan, concluding an eight-month strategic planning process. The Compact, originally founded by the City of Cambridge, Harvard, and MIT in 2013, is a community partnership of businesses, non-profits, city government, and universities where members leverage their combined capacities in research, teaching, innovation, entrepreneurship, and program development to address environmental challenges.

The three-year plan is focused on advancing sustainability in Cambridge through education, research, outreach, and advocacy in five key areas: greenhouse gas inventories, building energy, climate resiliency and adaptation, renewable energy, and sustainable transportation.

Activities planned for the first year include:

  • The hosting of educational events for members on sustainable transportation, building energy, and climate resiliency and adaptation.
  • The establishment of a “lab working group” to help members with lab facilities assess the feasibility of Cambridge’s goal to achieve net zero labs for new construction by 2030, and to determine best practices on energy management for labs. Non-members with labs are invited to participate in the working group.
  • An initiative to inventory members’ procurement practices for renewable energy assets, identify related needs, and develop a plan to engage faculty and students from Harvard and MIT in research projects to help inform members’ work in this area.
