Inclusionary Housing Zoning Ordinance Amendments Approved


On Monday, April 3rd, the Cambridge City Council passed an amendment to the Zoning Ordinance for Inclusionary Housing, increasing the number of affordable units required in new Cambridge developments from 15% to 20%. Under the new housing law, developments of ten or more units will be required to preserve 20% of the units for low and moderate income tenants. To preserve options for families, the ordinance also mandates that the affordable units be created in developments of 50,000 square feet or larger, allowing space for three-bedroom units. Rent for the affordable units will not exceed 30% of the tenant’s income.

The inclusionary housing zoning amendment will go into effect for projects permitted on or after June 30, 2017 and will be overseen by the Housing Division. For more information and to view the adopted Inclusionary Housing Zoning Petition click here
