National Bike Month Kicks Off!

Cambridge Police and Community Development Department Will Host Events & Provide Giveaways All Month Long

May is Bike Month and we're celebrating. The Cambridge Police and Community Development Department will be giving away free bike lights and reflective gear, as well as child bicycle helmets, at more than a dozen outreach events (see full listing below) throughout the city this May. We are also giving away educational materials and other gear to help you get around by bike comfortably and safely.

Events

Throughout the month of May, officers and City employees from the Community Development Department will be stationed at highly trafficked areas in our community and will provide giveaways, fliers with tips for how to get around on bike AND how to drive safely. 

  • Wednesday, May 3, 7-9:30a: Bike/Walk to School Day, Cambridge Public Schools
  • Wednesday, May 3, 8-9p: Bike Month light giveaway with MIT Police, 77 Mass Ave
  • Monday, May 8, 7:30-9:30a: Bike Month Outreach, Inman Square
  • Wednesday, May 10, 7:30-9:30a: Bike Month Outreach with MIT Police, 77 Mass Ave
  • May 13-21: Bay State Bike Week
  • Monday, May 15, 7:30-9:30a: Bike Breakfast, 300 Mass Ave
  • Tuesday, May 16, 7:30-9:30a: Bike Breakfast, Alewife at start of Minuteman Trail
  • Wednesday, May 17, 7:30-9:30a: Bike Breakfast, Harvard Square
  • Thursday, May 18, 7:30-9:30a: Bike Breakfast, Kendall Square (Broadway between Galileo and Ames)
  • Saturday, May 20, 9:30a: Women's History on Wheels Bike Ride, Cambridge Public Library (449 Broadway)
  • Thursday, May 25, 7:30-9:30a: Bike Month Outreach, Porter Square
  • Friday, May 26, 7:30-10:30a: Walk/Ride Day Corporate Challenge Celebration, City Hall (Central Square)

Bicycle Education Workshops

The Community Development Department will host a number of workshops in May and June. These are free, open to the public, FUN, and everyone gets a free helmet.

  • Bicycle Maintenance Basics and Beyond Basics workshops: Wednesday, May 17th, 5:30-6:30 p.m. (Basics) and 7-8 p.m. (Beyond Basics), Moore Youth Center (12 Gilmore St) 
  • Riding With Families, Monday, June 5th, 5:30-6:30p, 344 Broadway
  • Urban Cycling and Hubway Basics, Wednesday, June 7th, 5:30-6:30p
