Recap of Fair Housing Listening Session

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, the Cambridge Community Development Department (CDD) and Human Rights Commission (HRC) convened a public listening session on fair housing in Cambridge.  The listening session was an opportunity to gather input from Cambridge residents and community members about barriers to fair housing. 

The event began with a short presentation with information about CDD and HRC, Fair Housing laws, and the City’s 5-year Fair Housing Plan, which includes an Analysis to Impediments of Fair Housing Choice (AI).  The City’s 5-year Fair Housing Plan and Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice is part of the City’s planning efforts for use of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding in future years.

Following the presentation, the meeting was open to public comment.  Participants shared their experiences searching for housing in Cambridge, their observations of resident and property manager relationships, and concerns about the need for more affordable housing in the City. Housing resources from a variety of city and non-profit agencies was made available to attendees. The feedback gathered at the listening will be incorporated into the Analysis to Impediments of Fair Housing Choice.

A second Fair Housing Listening Session will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Valente Library, 826 Cambridge Street.
