Harvard Square Kiosk and Plaza rendering

Since 2017, City staff have worked closely with the Harvard Square Kiosk and Plaza Working Group to create a vision for the future use, operation, and governance of the Kiosk and Plaza. In the next 1-2 years, the City plans to restore the Kiosk in a historically sensitive way that maintains the unique character and experience of the public space. In tandem with this restoration process, the City will seek an operator for the Kiosk, and a Request for Information (RFI) has been issued to inform this process.

The City envisions the Harvard Square Kiosk and Plaza to be flexible and dynamic community assets that enhance the everyday life of Harvard Square, attract and serve a broad range of people, and act as platforms for community gatherings. Operation will include a permanent Visitor Information Center and regular community programming, including civic and social activities. The City anticipates hiring an entity to operate the Kiosk on a daily basis.

The RFI seeks feedback about the Kiosk and Plaza’s scope, financial sustainability, and programming from parties interested in being the Kiosk operator. With input from experienced and creative professionals, the City hopes to better define criteria and strategies for selecting an operator and will use feedback collected through the RFI to create a stronger Request for Proposals (RFP) for an operator that will fulfill the service envisioned. As in the case of the RFI, the RFP will also involve a public review period before the City issues a final document.
