City of Cambridge Launches Year-Long Cambridge Street Planning Study and Community Engagement Process

The City of Cambridge today announced it will launch a year-long community engagement process to develop a shared vision for the future of the dynamic and distinct segment of Cambridge Street that stretches from Lechmere Station to the heart of Inman Square. The process will recognize the character and diversity that make this area unique and prepare a plan for the future of this distinctive area.

Cambridge Street was identified in Envision Cambridge as an area where sensitive and sustainable growth could provide opportunities for affordable housing; support local retail and service providers; enhance opportunities for walking and bicycling; and improve the public realm. 

“This study will identify opportunities to celebrate the current character of Cambridge Street and provide future opportunities for all to be part of the Cambridge Street community,” said Cambridge City Manager Louis A. DePasquale. “By planning the future of Cambridge Street with the community, we will produce a vision that will keep this vital corridor relevant and thriving for the current and next generation of residents and businesses.”

The study’s focus will be on exploring opportunities for new or improved public spaces, maintaining and expanding the small business eco-system, and soliciting community interests and priorities to inform land use, zoning and urban design, and transportation recommendations. Lessons from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on residents and businesses, and the city’s focus on resilience and climate change preparedness will serve as guideposts for the study.

“Cambridge Street is a piece of living history - its businesses, people, and institutions give it its personality and cultural identity,” said Iram Farooq, Assistant City Manager for Community Development.
“The city hopes to develop a shared vision for Cambridge Street based on an inclusive and transparent process.”
