The City and local affordable housing partners work together to create and preserve affordable housing in Cambridge. Throughout the month of May 2019, the City will join Cambridge Housing Authority, Homeowner's Rehab, Inc., and Just-A-Start and other local organizations in hosting events, info sessions, and community conversations bringing awareness to Cambridge's affordable housing programs, initiatives, and milestones. The Affordable Housing Month of Action will culminate in a celebration of the Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust's 30th anniversary. 

The community is invited to join in the discussions, information sessions, and events related to affordable housing in Cambridge.

"Voices of Affordable Housing" Poster Exhibit

Location: City Hall lobby, 795 Massachusetts Ave.

Wednesday, May 8
Cambridge Multi-Service Center Housing Workshop
Location: Cambridge Multi-Service Center, 362 Green St.
Time: 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Learn about tools and strategies that can be used to assist your housing search. Topics include tenants' rights overview, discussing section 8 potential, conflict resolution tips, how to improve your credit report, and more.
Note: this workshop is held every Wednesday in May.

Thursday, May 9
Just-A-Start's Squirrelwood Groundbreaking
Location:
Linwood Courtyard (Entrance near 40 Market Street)
Time: 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Just-A-Start invites the public to join in celebrating the groundbreaking of the Squirrelwood project, which will include the refinancing and rehabilitation of two existing Just-A-Start buildings as well as the construction of 23 new units at Linwood Court.

Tuesday, May 14
Housing Finance 101
Location:
Cambridge Senior Center, 806 Massachusetts Ave.
Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m

Attend a presentation  by Peter Roth, a lecturer at MIT's Center for Real Estate and the School of Architecture and Planning, about the basics of affordable housing finance, the obstacles to creating affordable housing, and tools we could consider to create new affordable housing. The presentation will be followed by Q&A.The event is co-sponsored by A Better Cambridge and the Cambridge Residents Alliance.

2-Part Condo Ownership Workshop
Location: City Hall Annex, 344 Broadway
Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m.

The Cambridge Community Development Department and the Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance are offering a 2-part workshop for current condo owners and those interested in owning a condo. The class will cover the legal structure of condominiums, property management and maintenance, financial management and taxes, condo insurance, and more. Completion of a CHAPA-certified First-Time Homebuyer workshop is recommended.

Community Book Discussion:
The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America

Join the Community Development Department and the Cambridge Public Library for a moderated discussion about The Color of Law. Free copies of the book are available to check out at the Main Library Q&A Desk (449 Broadway). Refreshments will be provided at the beginning of the event. Free to all; no RSVP necessary

Senior Housing Discussion Group

Cambridge Senior Center, 806 Massachusetts Ave.
Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

All seniors (aged 60 or older) are invited to join this discussion group. Topics will include property manager/landlord communications, preparing for apartment inspections, and more. 
Note: These recurring discussions are held every third Monday morning of the month.

Time: 6-7:00 p.m. and 7-8:00 p.m. (two identical hour-long sessions will be held)
Attend these free information sessions to learn about the City's affordable rental and homeownership programs.
