Active and Recent Development Projects

625 Putnam Avenue under construction

The City of Cambridge employs many strategies to preserve and create affordable housing.  Strategies include the acquisition of existing residential buildings, new construction, adaptive re-use of non-residential buildings, condominium acquisition, renovation of existing buildings, and preservation of existing affordable housing. Housing Division staff work closely with non-profit housing providers, the Cambridge Housing Authority to plan, design, and finance these efforts.

Financing commitments made by the City and Affordable Housing Trust leverage funding from public and private sources including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), MassHousing, the Massachusetts Housing Partnership, the Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation (CEDAC), other public agencies, local banks and private investors. Since the end of rent control in Cambridge in 1995, the City's efforts have resulted in the preservation or creation of more than 4,000 affordable units across the city.
