Cambridge Council on Aging (COA), in collaboration with Somerville Cambridge Elder Services, has started a Memory Café at the Citywide Senior Center. We are excited to join a growing network providing a safe, welcoming space for individuals with forgetfulness or changes in thinking, and their families and care partners.

Memory Cafés began in the Netherlands in 1997, and are growing across the US. Memory Cafes aim to reduce the stigma associated with dementia and allow people to come together to enjoy activities, conversation and refreshments, without a focus on decline or disease. Activities may include arts and crafts, or music and dance; all provide a space for social interaction to reduce isolation.

The COA café will take place monthly, on the third Friday, from 10am-12pm.

No dementia or other diagnosis is required to attend, and no one is asked to share his or her diagnosis at the café.

Memory Cafés are not facilitated support groups, or a drop-off respite program for caregivers. If you need information about these types of support services, please contact Maryellen at x6215 or mmceleney@cambridgema.gov.
