Cambridge STEAM Initiative Honored at Science Club for Girls Catalyst Awards

Science Club for Girls partners with Cambridge STEAM Initiative

On October 1, 2020, Science Club for Girls (SCFG) hosted a virtual event celebrating 25 years of empowering and inspiring girls to embrace STEM through meaningful mentorship and free, hands-on education. As part of this event, the Catalyst Awards recognized the outstanding leadership of individuals and institutions advancing diverse girls and women to succeed in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year, the organization also recognized the Cambridge STEAM Initiative as a Silver Anniversary Award Honoree

The Cambridge STEAM Initiative is a partnership between the City of Cambridge’s Department of Human Service Programs, Cambridge Public Schools, and the Cambridge Public Library. The Initiative works to increase equitable access to high quality STEAM programming so that all Cambridge residents will be STEAM literate and possess the skills to be successful, engaged, and responsible citizens in a rapidly changing world.

Two years ago, when SCFG was restructuring, the Cambridge STEAM Initiative worked closely with the organization to ensure programming continued smoothly for its Cambridge participants. This collaboration led to the start of a mutually beneficial partnership that continues today.

‘We view the Science Club for Girls and the programming they provide to our city’s girls and young women as being a critical piece of our local STEAM ecosystem and are thrilled to support them,” said Sharlene Yang, Director of the Initiative “By purposefully reaching out to girls and young women, who are also youth of color and/or from lower income families, and engaging them in an enrichment program that builds STEAM habits of mind through quality curriculum and mentorship with STEM professionals, Science Club for Girls creates opportunities and connections for young people to which they may not otherwise have access.”

See Science Club for Girls in-person and virtual clubs in action and hear from club participants and mentors, who will share the impact SCFG has had on their lives. Be inspired by this supportive community of women and girls, who are paving the way for a more diverse, inclusive world of STEM.

About the Science Club for Girls
Based in Cambridge, MA, the Science Club for Girls (SCFG) fosters excitement, confidence and literacy in STEM for girls from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. With women making up less than 24 percent of the STEM workforce—and black and Hispanic women at less than four percent—SCFG addresses a critical need, offering a continuum of engaging activities in STEM for K-8 girls, leadership experiences for high school girls, and adult mentoring by committed women in STEM.
